In my video piece The New Cut, I researched a manmade river of the same name that runs through the centre of Bristol. I constructed my own version of its creation, exaggerating, fabricating and omitting facts. I then used subtitles to overlay this narrative onto footage I shot of The New Cut. In order to capture this footage I floated wireless cameras downstream on a raft. I then followed the cameras with wireless receivers and picked up the footage. The fluctuation in image quality, camera movement and speed combine to create a frontier-footage feel of being at a point of an unexplored boundary. This coupled with the pulsation between the two images, sets off a visceral reaction of unfamiliarity with the landscape; a thickening of the on-screen air. Cameras that are travelling through an English city could be going through an unexplored rainforest or an out of bounds radioactive disaster zone.
