Story 1
"The Miners Strike of 1913 meant that Grandad had to dig coal from a seam at the surface of Donkey Island (Troopers Hill).
I had gone with him. It was a Saturday. He had shouted at me for asking him too many questions so I ran off and hid. When he finished for the afternoon he couldn't find me and I stayed hiding after he left.
As I clambered over the pipe leading up to the chimney, I saw four boys climbing up from the river, they went over to the hole, two boys climbed inside it. Suddenly the ground gave in and they started shouting. Some Men ran up from the cottages below. I was scared and I ran back home.
The first boy that they dug up was dead. Fifteen Minutes later they dug up the second and he recovered."
